Mu Alpha Theta

Mu Alpha Theta is the national mathematics honors society for high schools and community colleges. In March 2004 the Westchester Community College application for a charter in Mu Alpha Theta was approved by the national office and the Governing council. Students who meet the criteria for this national honor society will now be able to avail themselves of the many benefits that come with membership.

Because full membership requires students to meet eligibility requirements, the Westchester Community College Math Club will consist of two subsets – students who meet these requirements and students who don’t. This way, membership in the Math Club does not exclude students who do not meet the Mu Alpha Theta requirements. These students will be known as associate members, as opposed to full members. Hopefully, associate members will become motivated to meet the requirements so that they too can enjoy the respect and advantages that come with being members of a national honor society.

Benefits and opportunities that come with membership in Mu Alpha Theta include the following:

   • Option to attend the National Convention each summer. Mu Alpha Theta offers Convention Grants which
      include room and board and reimbursement up to $500 for transportation costs.
   • Members are eligible to receive up to over 50% off the regular price of the student edition of Maple software.
   • Opportunity to participate in the Mu Alpha Theta Contest.
   • Members are eligible to apply for several different Mu Alpha Theta scholarships and awards.

The Casualty Actuarial Society/Society of Actuaries scholarship program is available to the following groups that are under-represented in the actuarial profession: African American, Hispanic, and Native North American. An applicant must be either a U.S. citizen or have a permanent resident visa

The Andree Award, named in honor of Mu Alpha Theta founders Richard and Josephine Andree, is given to a student interested in becoming a mathematics teacher. The student must be a high school senior or enrolled in college but not in his or her last year of college (e.g. a student in the fourth year of a five year program may apply). The student must either be or have been a member of a Mu Alpha Theta Chapter. The Andree Award winner receives a $1000 cash prize, a plaque, and complimentary registration at the National Convention.
