WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESENTS MACBETH ON OCTOBER 9

Westchester Community College presents Macbeth performed by the American Shakespeare Center on Saturday, October 9 at 8:00 p.m. in the Academic Arts Theatre on the Valhalla Campus. Macbeth is one of the most famous works by William Shakespeare. However, the story of Macbeth as told by Shakespeare bears no relation to real events in Scottish history. Unlike the way he is depicted in the play, in reality Macbeth was an admired and able monarch. In the back-stage world of theatre, some believe that the play is cursed, and will not mention its name aloud, referring to it instead as "The Scottish Play."

The American Shakespeare Center, through its performances, theatres, exhibitions, and educational programs, brings the words of Shakespeare, the joys of theatre and language, and the communal experience of the Renaissance stage to all. By recreating Renaissance conditions of performance, the ASC explores its repertory of plays for accessibility and a better understanding of these great works and of the human theatrical enterprise past, present and future. In their hometown of Staunton, Virginia, the ASC has conducted a recreation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theatre, the Blackfriars Playhouse, and also has plans to build an open-air replica of London’s Globe Theatre. By following the basic principles of Renaissance theatrical production, the troupe gives audiences the pleasures that an Elizabethan playgoer would have enjoyed.

Tickets are $20 (general admission), $18 (students/seniors) and $13 (children under 13). For tickets or information, call the Office of Cultural Affairs at 914-606-6262.
