Scholarships and
Awards for Continuing Students
Those who have completed some academic work at Westchester Community
College or other institution beyond high school, and who have at
least one semester of study remaining at the college.
Some awards, related to specific curriculum areas or college
service, are determined by other college departments or committees
and may have a special application form and determination process.
These awards are designated by a diamond ♦. Inquire at the
particular department or the Foundation office.
Nancy Jo Abeles
Honors Scholarships
These competitive scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in
the Westchester Community College Honors Program who have
successfully completed two honors courses and plan to take a minimum
of two honors courses during the year of the award. The award amount
may vary from year to year, but is generally $1,250-$1,500 per
semester.
Nancy Jo Abeles 2nd
Year Merit Scholarships
These scholarships are given to continuing students of merit who
attend Westchester Community College on a full-time basis. The award
amounts may vary from year to year, but are generally $1,000 per
semester.
Alpha Group
Scholarship
In honor of Dr. Joseph N. Hankin’s twenty-fifth year as president of
the college, the Alpha Group, an organization of chief executive
officers, established an endowed scholarship for a student who has
excelled in a business-related curriculum.
Walter Anderson New
Century Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is presented to an outstanding second-year
Westchester Community College student pursuing his or her studies in
Communications and Media Arts.
Asian Students
Scholarship
This award, made possible by the Far Eastern Club of Westchester
Community College, is available to an Asian student who is a
permanent resident or U.S. citizen. The recipient must have
completed at least 12 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or
better. The student must enroll for a minimum of six credits during
the term of the award and is encouraged to assist other students as
a math tutor.
Leo Benardo Language
Scholarships
These scholarships, established by Professor Stella Economou in
honor of her mentor, are awarded to students who have demonstrated
academic excellence in two or more language courses at the college.
Kathleen Bucci
Memorial Book Scholarship
This $250 award is given to a second-year student in the Associate
Degree in Nursing program at the college who has a cumulative GPA of
at least 3.25. The student must use the funds to purchase books and
supplies at the college bookstore.
Zoe Caldwell New
Century Scholarship
This $2,500 scholarship is given to a second-year Westchester
Community College student pursuing his or her studies in arts or
humanities.
Cambridge
University Press Ronald Mansbridge Scholarship
Two $2,500 scholarships are awarded to students who study abroad at
Cambridge University during the summer. Open to honors students who
are accepted into the Summer Study Abroad Program.
Challenger Award
The Challenger Award, established by an anonymous donor, assists
resourceful, responsible, working single mothers to continue
studying at Westchester Community College by helping them with
general living expenses. A preference will be given to students in
the Nursing Program. Award amount may vary from $200 to $1,500, as
may the number of awards.
Cowan Family
Scholarships
These scholarships, established by Foundation board member Lois
Cowan and her husband Marvin, are awarded to second-year students
who exhibit merit and need.
Joseph & Joan Cullman
Scholarship
This award is presented to a second-year student in the visual or
performing arts, who has demonstrated outstanding academic
achievement and financial need.
Cesare De Feo
Scholarship
A $3,000 scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with a 3.0
GPA, who is majoring in Electrical Engineering and is in need of
financial aid.
Angelo Delgrosso
Alumni Scholarships
Established by Douglas Birdsall and other alumni/ae in honor of the
college’s retired Dean of Students, these awards recognize students
who have demonstrated academic achievement while making
contributions to the enrichment of the quality of the student
experience through participation in a major extracurricular
activity.
Carlos del Rey
Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Professor Emeritus Carlos del Rey, the founder of El
Club Hispano-Americano, this $250 award is given to an active member
of ECHA who has demonstrated outstanding contributions and
commitment to the club.
Carol Doyle Memorial
Award
This award is presented to a second-year female ADN student, who has
demonstrated enthusiasm, dedication and leadership qualities in
nursing.

Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to part-time students with high
academic rank.
Irene Economou
Memorial Future Teachers Scholarships
This scholarship, established by Professor Stella Economou in memory
of her twin sister, is given to students who wish to pursue a career
in teaching.
David & Jane Falk ESL
Scholarships
These scholarships of varying amounts are presented to students for
whom English is a second language. Awards may also be made to
English as Second Language students in the non-credit programs.

Memorial Nursing Award
This book award is given to a nursing student who is a mother with
demonstrated academic achievement and financial need.
William Friedman
Memorial Award
An award of $400 is given to a second-year student who has a 3.5 GPA
and has completed Engineering Physics I and II and Calculus I and II
with A’s in three out of the four courses.
Fuji Photo Film USA
Honors Scholarships
These scholarships of varying amounts are presented to students
enrolled in the Liberal Arts, Business, Marketing or Communications
curricula that have a GPA of 3.0 or better, and have demonstrated
financial need.

Scholarships
Several scholarships, of varying amounts, are presented to
second-year students who have demonstrated both merit and need.
Glickenhaus
Scholarships
These scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2,000 per year, are
presented to students from underrepresented groups with significant
financial need.
Mary Lou Greco
Memorial Award
This award is presented to a student enrolled in either the LPN or
ADN program at Westchester Community College. Preference is given to
students interested in trauma nursing.
Greenbaum Brothers Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a motivated immigrant student who has
completed at least one semester at WCC, has a grade point average of
at least 3.0 and contributes to his or her community in a meaningful
way. Preference will be given to residents of Tarrytown, Sleepy
Hollow, White Plains, and Port Chester.
Greenwich Woods
Nursing Scholarships
These $5,000 scholarships are awarded to students in the Associate
Degree in Nursing program, and may be applied to tuition and fees,
books, and nursing supplies. In addition to the scholarship,
recipients are paid to work a minimum of 16 hours per week at the
Greenwich Woods Health Care Center in Greenwich, CT, and are
committed to working there for a period of two years after
graduation.
Dr. Joseph N. Hankin
Book Awards
Established by friends, family and colleagues in honor of Dr.
Hankin’s twenty-fifth anniversary, up to fourteen awards will be
given annually to help students purchase books.
Mark Hanna
Scholarship
Established by the Helmsley Charitable Trust in recognition of the
superb care Westchester Community College Professor Mark Hanna
provided Harry Helmsley during his final illness, the scholarship
provides $1,000 to one or more outstanding student(s) in the
Respiratory Therapy curriculum.
HBO Digital Arts Scholarship
Funded by a gift from HBO, these scholarships are awarded to
students who demonstrate academic merit and financial need who are
studying the Digital Arts. Preference is given to those enrolled at
the Peekskill Extension Center.
Honors Study Abroad
Program Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to students who study abroad at
Cambridge University during the summer. Open to honors students who
are accepted into the Summer Study Abroad Program.
Hudson City Savings
Scholarships
These awards are presented to students enrolled in business
curricula, who demonstrate community involvement, academic
achievement and financial need.

Kaung Memorial, & Yue-Sung Kaung Memorial Scholarships
These awards of varying amounts are made to students who have
completed at least 12 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or
better. The recipients must enroll for a minimum of six credits
during the term of the award and are encouraged to assist other
students as math tutors.

These awards are presented to students in the Restaurant Management
Program, who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement,
service and economic need.

Achievement Scholarships
These awards are made to continuing students who demonstrate merit
and need, and who succeed in college in spite of significant
personal challenges.

Scholarships
These scholarships of varying amounts are awarded to students who
have demonstrated academic excellence at Westchester Community
College. Preference is given to students enrolled in a nursing
curriculum at the college.
Lim Ebon & Tan Le Eng
Memorial Scholarship
An award of $400 is available to a student enrolled in a
mathematics, engineering or physical sciences curriculum and who has
completed at least 24 credits with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or
better. The recipient must enroll for a minimum of six credits
during the term of the award and is encouraged to assist other
students as a math tutor.

Martin Scholarship
This $3,000 scholarship is awarded to a continuing student who has
achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, who demonstrates
financial need, and who is actively involved in student life on
campus.
Christine Mastrangelo
Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by family, former colleagues and
friends in memory of Christine Mastrangelo, a former professor for
many years in the Computer Information Systems department. It is
presented to an outstanding CIS student.
MBIA Business Studies Scholarship
These awards are presented to outstanding students enrolled in
business curricula, who demonstrate financial need.
Madeline McFadden
Memorial Nursing Award
This award remembers the long and distinguished career of a
consummate nurse, teacher, and mentor. It is presented to a student
in either the Advanced Nursing degree or Practical Nursing Programs
at the college to help meet expenses above and beyond tuition and to
complete the degree program.
N. Anne McKiernan
Memorial Scholarship
This $500 award was established by family and friends in honor of a
dedicated nurse and administrator of the Behavioral Health Center of
the Westchester Medical Center. It is presented to a female student
in her second year enrolled in the Advanced Nursing degree Program
at the college. Preference is given to students who have
demonstrated an interest in behavioral psychology.

Lynch O’Connor Awards
These awards, made possible by the Westchester Community Foundation,
are presented to outstanding students in the LPN Program, who
demonstrate financial need. Inquire at the nursing division.
Organization of
Chinese-Americans Asian Student Scholarship
The local chapter of the national OCA offers this $600 award to a
student of Asian descent who has achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 after
completing at least 12 credits and enrolls for a minimum of six
credits during the term of the award. The recipient should
demonstrate an interest in promoting or learning about the cultures
of the region and is encouraged to assist other students as a math
tutor.
Shirley A. Phillips Scholarship
This significant scholarship is established to honor former VP and
Foundation Executive Director Shirley A. Phillips. It is presented
to a high-achieving female student who exemplifies Shirley’s
professional spirit and style by demonstrating leadership and
academic excellence, participates in the campus community, and
inspires her peers. Preference is given to a student who has
financial challenges.

Foundation Nursing Awards
These scholarships are awarded to nursing students entering the LPN
Certificate Program at Westchester Community College (three per year
at $2,000 each) and nursing students in their second year of the ADN
program (seven per year at $2,000 each).

Foundation Technology Scholarships
Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 to $2,500 each are awarded to
students who have demonstrated academic excellence in a technology
or computer-related curricula.

Rodriguez Scholarship
This award is presented to a Hispanic or Latino (a) student, who
demonstrates academic achievement and financial need. This award is
made possible through the generosity of Westchester Community
College faculty member Richard Rodriguez and his wife Beth.
Russell Retention
Resources Fund
Established by Theodora L. Russell in honor of her late husband
Eugene E. Russell, this award assists students who have serious
financial problems. The award is made only after the student has
successfully completed a portion of his or her studies at the
college and may be forced to drop out because of external financial
reasons.

A number of scholarships of varying amounts are awarded to
second-year students who exhibit both merit and need. The fund was
established by a bequest from Theodora L. Russell, a Director of the
Westchester Community College Foundation.
Carol and Dorland
Russett Memorial Scholarships
These awards are presented to outstanding female students who wish
to continue their education at the college, in order to assist them
in achieving their full potential as professionals. The award
remembers Dr. Russett and her forty-one years at the college as a
student, staff member, professor, and administrator; as well as her
husband Dorland, a staunch supporter of the college’s scholarship
program up until his death, when he left the college funds to
permanently endow a scholarship.

Several awards of varying amounts are presented to outstanding
continuing students who demonstrate financial need.
Scarsdale Women’s Club Scholarship
This award is presented to female students who demonstrate financial
need and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Emma & Walter Scharf
Memorial Scholarship
Established by family and friends, this award is presented to a
student enrolled in a nursing, culinary arts, or dietetic technician
program. The student must have completed at least 12 credits, and
shown dedication and passion in their field of interest.
Ruth and Jerome
Siegel Scholarships
Two scholarships are awarded to outstanding students enrolled in a
business curriculum. To be eligible, students must be entering their
second year at the college, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and
demonstrate service and financial need.
Skirball
Foundation/Gateway Scholarships
The Skirball-Gateway scholarships assist men and women wishing to
pursue English language learning (ELL) classes and citizenship
classes, and provide scholarships for those wishing to pursue
advanced education and degree programs.
Linda Ching Sledge
Future Educators Scholarship
Established by family and colleagues in 2006 upon Dr. Sledge’s
retirement, this award honors her thirty-two years at the college as
a teacher, scholar and writer of fiction. Dr. Sledge, Professor
Emerita, is the faculty founder of the college’s chapter of the
Future Educators Association.

Several scholarships of varying amounts are presented to outstanding
continuing students who demonstrate financial need.
Stop & Shop Companies
Scholarships
Two scholarships are awarded to second-year students enrolled in a
business-related or food service curriculum. Perhaps as important as
a good academic record, the recipients will have demonstrated
enthusiasm, dedication and leadership in their field or college
activities. The recipients may be selected from nominations made by
the chairperson of the above-noted curriculum areas.

who have completed at least 15 credits at Westchester Community
College and have attained an overall GPA of at least 3.0.

Diversity Honors Scholarship
Supported by a grant from New York State with matching funds from
the WCC Foundation, these $1,000 awards are given to outstanding
students from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. With a
contribution of $10,000 that provided matching funds for the SUNY
Diversity Honors program, the Foundation made possible twenty
scholarships in 2009-2010.

Scholarships
These awards are presented to outstanding students who demonstrate
financial need. Awards are made possible through the generosity of
Westchester Community College Foundation board member David Swope.
Mary & James Wallach Scholar Awards
Significant scholarships are awarded to female students who
demonstrate academic achievement (GPA 3.25) and have significant
financial need.
Each scholar is partnered with a faculty mentor.

Memorial Scholarship
An award of $400 is presented to a second-year student who has
demonstrated high academic achievement in marketing or other
business-related curriculum.

Wiener Scholarships
These scholarships are presented to students enrolled in human
services, business, or the health sciences. Recipients must be
continuing students who have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or better.
Westchester Community
College Alumni Association Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a continuing student who is a
Westchester County resident at the time of application, and who is
preferably the son/daughter of an alumnus/a. The student must have
demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, and shown
perseverance, volunteerism and leadership to Westchester Community
College and the outside community.
Westchester County
Association of Town Superintendents of Highways Awards
Three awards ranging from $250 to $500 are awarded to full and
part-time students having a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must be
residents of Westchester County and enrolled in the Civil Technology
Program.
Westchester
Federation of Women’s Clubs Scholarships
These partial scholarships, based on academic achievement and
financial need, are awarded to female students who are continuing at
the college in Liberal Arts, Music or Fine Arts.
David Wray Memorial
Scholarship
This award is presented to a part-time continuing student enrolled
in the Early Childhood curriculum, who is either a U.S. citizen or
permanent resident and who demonstrates academic potential and
financial need.
Fred Wright
Scholarship
Established by this former Foundation Board member, scholarships of
$500 each are available for sons or daughters of active members of
the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. These students
must be attending Westchester Community College. If no applications
are received from relatives of members of the IBEW, other students
will be considered. |
